The most famous Czech musical comedy about how not to lose your money, but also about your beloved Marenka and about one ingenious ambush.
A fair comes to the village, everyone is happy, everyone is happy. Only Marenka is troubled. She's about to marry a groom she doesn't love. Marenka's dear Jeník comforts her that their faithful love will overcome all obstacles. But he wants to arrange Marenka's wedding to the stammering and stupid Vasek at any cost. Meanwhile, Jeník makes an ingenious bargain... The libretto to the most performed Czech comic opera, The Bartered Bride, was written by Karel Sabina, who was famous in his time as a poet, a storm-trooper and a merciless satirist (and also as a confidant of the Austrian secret police). Bedřich Smetana first conceived Sabina's libretto as a "singspiel", i.e. a play with songs, and thus created a perfect picture of a Czech village and Czech character. However, many of the now well-known and popular arias did not originally feature in the play at all. Smetana did not write them until later, when he completed the play into a full-fledged opera and ensured its lasting international success. The Palmovka Theatre's production will return to the original "singspiel" form of The Bartered Bride in many ways, and at the same time present it in a new musical coat, written by one of our most prominent opera composers, Ivan Acher.
